Eating out with gout: what to order

Across 43 common restaurant dishes, 14 grade A or B and 18 grade D or E. In almost every cuisine the grade follows the protein. A full restaurant portion of meat or shellfish is what pushes a dish up, while bean, lentil, egg, cheese and rice dishes stay low.

Each dish is one standard serving, broken into ingredients and graded from the same food data as the rest of the site. A restaurant's version may use more meat or a different sauce, so the Dish Decoder grades whatever you type, including a portion size. Drinks with the meal are on alcohol and gout.

Thai and Vietnamese

Pho and pad Thai both carry a full serving of meat or shrimp plus broth or peanuts.

How these grades are built, and why a plant purine counts for less than an animal one, is on the methodology page. Protein choices in more detail: how much protein can you eat with gout?
